Security
Your security is maintained by keeping your operating systems up-dated. Using and maintaining Firewall settings and Anti-Virus programs. Lastly running anti-spy ware programs are important. There are a few free software programs for these security areas mentioned above that can be linked to from our free and cheap software page. Our free and cheap software page Besides running updates and software to protect your computer system, be careful with opening email attachments on your computer. We will simply not open email attachments here at thecomputersociety.org as a standard practice. This does not mean all attachments are bad, they are not usually harmfull if you expect them and know who they are from. Watch where you Internet surf, is good advice. Turning off Active X and scripting languages is a strong security measure if you can set it back ok (not for beginners). We have a posted lesson in our education section about this. (See this lesson) Rename and find alternatives to the email address book. Type in your passwords manualy rather than storing them in auto-loading files. There are many other strong security measures that we will post lessons on in our education section in the near future. Remember this: if you get a virus or hijacked by a hacker you endanger us all. It is not just a personal issue. Is it fair that we have to go to such measures? No! Like it or not the Internet has changed in the past two years. A user group like thecomputersociety.org and many other user groups can help by encouraging good practices and doing what we can to provide some safe space, as best as we can. It is worth considering that we are the Internet, it is not just a tangle of protocols and wires and wirless signals.
