Here is a little information about the recent February meeting.
We discussed Vista having initial security lapses with Microsoft's One
Care Service for anti-virus and firewall. It is expected that Microsoft
will fix the security lapses quickly but it did end up in the computer
news.
We also spoke about Apple computers Steve Jobs calling for an end to
digital rights management protection for music and video. His contention
is that it has not stopped piracy at all and hinders and obstructs the
normal use of legally purchased music and movies.
Glenn Yearous brought in a few tips that he discovered on the Internet
that are worthwhile.
1. How to rename a series of files all at once. This
is especially useful for renaming photos taken with digital cameras that
have cryptic names like DSC0001238845.jpg. If you went to the park and
took pictures you might want them to be called park(1).jpg and park(2).jpg
and so on to keep them in order and to enable search to find park photos.
First you select a whole series of files and then point your cursor at
the first file in the series. Then you right click that one and select
rename from the menu that appears. You would then rename that file park(001).jpg
and then press enter. The entire list of file selected will then be renamed.
The important thing to remember is to include the parenthesis around the
number. The subsequent files names will have their names and numbers in
order and include the parentheses automatically.
2. If you like an uncluttered screen without all thoes pesky icons all
over the place, turn icons off. Right click on the desktop window and
choose arrange icons by. One of the choices is show desktop icons, if
you uncheck that choice all the icons will vanish in a few moments. They
return by rechecking the same choice menu item, show desktop icons.
