Some Youtube videos can be downloaded to your hard drive and manipulated, such as extracting the audio for mp3 files. Which ones are legal to download and which are copyprotected is an issue for you to look into.
If you are using the Firefox Browser you can get an add on called Video Download Helper which can download some YouTube .flv files. (see our 2 software pages) After installing the add on go to Youtube and select a video as shown below. The black arrow points at the icon for Video Download Helper.
Once you click on the icon a small dropdown menu will appear. In this case we are downloading the bottom .flv file called "If_by_Rudyard_Kipling"
You then select a location to save it to and press the save button, very easy, when it works. Does not always.
A second method to download YouTube Video is to use the website called savetube.com You must first copy the URL from the Youtube Page...
...and then paste it into savetube.com The black arrow shows where to paste it and then press the Go button.
After that SaveTube will generate a download link for you. Click the download link.
A choice to save the file in a particular location and to name it will then appear. The default name is "get video" which you must change to some name with a .flv extenstion.
In this example I rename get_video to whatever.flv
That is all there is to that.
After you have the .flv files on you hard disk you can then use a program like Flv Audio Extractor (see our 2 software pages) to take just the audio out of the video in mp3 format.
It is quick and easy and the result will be an .mp3 file named the same as the original .flv file as shown below
You can also convert .flv files to other audio and video formats, we will cover these conversions in a seperate web page.
