The MSCONFIG Utility

The msconfig utility offers a number of controls, we will concentrate here on the Startup Programs control.

To open msconfig go to the Start Menu on your task bar and press that button. Then select the RUN command button .

When the Run Command window comes up type in the word msconfig as shown below and press OK.

As you see in the illustration below the utility has a number of tabs across the top of its window. The at the end on the right hand side is Startup.

Lets take a look at the Startup Tab. The Startup items with checks in the checkboxes to their left are the programs that load automatically when you "Start-Up" Windows. Look at all your choices here.

These programs can be necessary but often times they are not. To uncheck these boxes and thus to prevent these programs from starting automatically can improve your computers abilities.

The problem is knowing what these programs really are. When in doubt leave them alone.

In the example below ccApp, ccRegVfy,SNDMon, are Norton System Works Programs and we want them to load every time.

The TotRecSched is Total REcorder schedule and we could uncheck that box as this is not an important program.

So we uncheck TotRecSched and them click apply at the bottom of the window. For the change to take effect you have to restart your computer.

Too many programs running all the time is a most common computer problem, this is the fix for the unnecessary extras that get installed over time.

Another Tip for the use of this tab is to make changes one at a time and see what happens carefully. A lot of computer operators are not patient enough to do stuff like this carefully, especially the first few times you use this MSCONFIG utility caution is advised.
