System Restore Cleanup

The System Restore feature (see system restore) can build up many restore points that can take up many gigabytes and make backups too large.

Thee are two ways to reduce the build up of restore points. One way is to disable System Restore and all restore points will vanish. The Second way is to use the built in Disk Clean Up feature of Windows to eliminate all but the last restore point.

Unless you have a virus or worm or trojan problem of some other bad software infection, the disabling of System Restore is not necessary. If you do have a virus or something bad like that, then using a restore point may re-infect your system. With a virus disabling is the only real option for System Restore.

If there are no virus issues then Disk Clean Up is a far better choice. To get to the Disk Cleanup part of System Tools. First go to your Programs list in the Start Menu and select Accessories and System Tools and then Disk Clean Up. (as shown below)

The first screen of Disk Clean Up asks what driveto select in this case C: Drive press Ok

....and then a new screen will appear with two tabs at the top. (see below)

One tab says Disk clean Up and the other say more options. In this case select the more options tab and at the very bottom there is a button that denotes System Restore and tells you that you can free more disk space by removing all but the last restore point. Press the clean up button there and presto change-o you may gain a big portion of your hard drive back.

The System Restore feature is a seperate subject check this link to learn a bit about it. The Disk Clean Up tab is also a seperate subject but is really self explanatory, maybe.
